Match Report – 1st XI v Nelson CC – Away – Sunday 17th June 2018

[vc_row type=”container”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Unlike Mr Kennedy’s idol threats, this will be the first and last time I do this.

Having just been beaten by Rishton CC at u9 level on Sunday morning I was in a foul mood and on my way up the M65 to Nelson CC for what would be my first ever visit to play cricket (from what I can remember). I arrived, near enough, on time unlike my buddy Zeainy who had decided to have a lie in. Can you guess who it is yet?

John Seedle, having slept at Nelson the night before to set out his cones, eventually managed to get us all on the pitch for a pre match warm up.

That’s enough of the scene setting, onto the match!

Skipper, Paul “tails never fails” Houldsworth called…..and lost (unsure whether he called tails). Nelson decided to let us have a bat on a track used at least 4 times in the last week.

We started quite well reaching 23 until Hamza was the first man to fall. Ash was in next with Matt Oddie batting well. The wicket was already starting to get a bit tricky  (spitting like Lily Savage from Darwen CC). Ash nicked a “Savage” to the keeper who decided to pass it to first slip, out caught for 2. Phil Aspinall (3), myself (7) and Matt Oddie (a well grafted 32) fell in quick succession leaving us on 68-5. Ex skipper Paddy and old skipper Houldsworth then proceeded to show us how to bat, putting on 63 before Houlds was out for 33 (method of dismissal = knackered). Paddy (39) soon followed with the score on 140-7. Our lower order toiled for several overs but succumbed to the decent bowling of the Nelson attack. We finished on 148 all out having failed to use our overs, again!

SUMMARY: good start, poor from our middle order, rescued by the ex and current skipper and perhaps 20 or so runs short at the end…..or were we?

After having our tea (which didn’t include tea of the brew variety much to the disappointment of several of our players) we took to the field needing to defend a below par score.

A good start though, and we’ve got a chance on what was a difficult deck.

After the obligatory first ball wide, Stuart started well, bowling a decent line and length. His efforts were rewarded with a yorker ripping the off stump of Pettinger out the ground (good to see) and then removing their pro (caught behind) leaving Nelson on 16-2. Game on!

A decent stand saw the score reach 61 before a smart catch from Chippers gave  Newy his first wicket. A 40 stand followed as Crotty slapped anything slightly loose to the boundary.

Breakthrough, 100-4, breakthrough, 104-5 (both caught off the bowling of Ash). If you want to know who caught them look at the scorecard, I’m at work!

A further 25 run stand seemed to take the game away from us until Ash, and Ash alone, decided to appeal for an LBW against Crotty. I can only assume the constant motorway traffic drowned out the noise of Crotty middling it into his pads!! The umpire raised his finger, Crotty gone for a very sensible and very unfortunate 64.

Should we call him back?
No, Paddy was given out by the same umpire in the same fashion.

We managed to get another two wickets (both caught off the bowling of Newy) but they crept over the line at 149-8.

1) we didn’t use the wicket quite as well as Nelson but in the main fielded and caught well

2) we were 20 odd runs short at the end

3) Houldsworth really needs to bat himself higher and I have no idea why he’s not bowling!

Onto Friday and the T20 when we play…. Nelson….again![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
