GREAT HARWOOD CRICKET CLUB

Playing Cricket since 1849

Professional 1996 – 1997 – Chris Killen

Chris Killen came over to the UK originally in the late 1980’s to take over from an injured Sylvester Clarke at Enfield in the Lancashire League. Batsmen who thought they were in for an “easier ride” got a rude awakening as he was one of the quicker bowlers in Australia at the time despite his shortage of 1st Class experience.

He moved on to Barnoldswick in the Ribblesdale League and spearheaded a League winning side which also included Hylton Ackermann, overseas amateur, who later played test cricket for South Africa, and Peter Waterman who opened the bowling for the Minor Counties representative side.

During this period he headed the batting averages twice and was always up amongst the Leagues leading bowlers. In addition he was personally responsible for a sudden increase in the purchase of batting helmets around the League.

He played for Great Harwood for 2 years in 1996 and 1997 scoring over 500 runs each season, and 70 and 56 wickets respectively. He never re-captured the outstanding form of his earlier years and in his second season he became affected by knee problems and often bowled off a short run, or turned to off spin.

His professional career stats can be found via cricinfo.
